TRADITIONAL COFFINS.
Apprenticed in the 1860s as a joiner, Alfred Franks worked as a cabinet and coffin maker. A well known Nottingham character, he made coffins in English oak and elm. Sadly none of his work has survived, although he handed on to his apprentices a respect for tradition in the working of wood. Today, Alfred Franks' heirs and successors continue in the coffin making tradition. They manufacture coffins under the name of Vic Fearn & Company Ltd in both Nottingham and on the Isle of Wight.
